Our centre

The Eye Centre in Mater Private Dublin is the largest private ophthalmic centre in the country. Our focus is to preserve, restore or enhance the gift of sight, through a combination of leading edge technology and innovative procedures.

Our team of specialists, all fully qualified consultant ophthalmologists, offer advanced care in sub-specialties such as glaucoma, retinal services, ophthalmic oculoplastic surgery, corneal and refractive surgery, paediatric services and neuro-ophthalmology.

Our services are delivered through three core areas – eye laser, general ophthalmology and retinal – where a wide range of medical and surgical eye conditions are successfully diagnosed, managed and treated.

Our services

The Mater Private eye laser clinic in Dublin was the first of its kind in Ireland dedicated to refractive (corrective eye) surgery. Since its establishment, we have performed over 20,000 refractive surgeries. We perform laser eye surgery to treat:

  • Short sightedness (myopia)
  • Long sightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism (blurred or distorted vision)
  • Presbyopia (the need for reading glasses)

In addition to providing laser eye surgery, we perform intraocular lens implantation surgery for patients who are very long sighted or very short sighted and eye laser surgery may not be an option.  An intraocular lens is placed just in front of the natural lens, acting a little like a contact lens within the eye. Mater Private Hospital has performed over 1,500 such procedures, more than any other centre in the country.

At our retinal eye division, we offer rapid access to a range of assessments and tests to assist in the diagnosis of retinal eye conditions. We treat a wide range of conditions such as:

  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal vein occlusion
  • Epiretinal membrane
  • Retinal detachment

Advanced care is offered in general ophthalmology conditions such as:
