Education & Experience

Ms. Caitriona Kirwan is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Mater Private Network in Dublin. 

Ms. Kirwan MB BCh BAO (hons) MRCOphth, FRCSI(ophth) qualified from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2001. Following internship in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital she returned to UCD where she carried out research examining blood vessel formation in the retina and was awarded an MSc(hons). She carried out basic and higher level surgical training in Ophthalmology in Dublin and Cork. Ms. Kirwan completed a fellowship in eye laser refractive surgery in the Mater Private Hospital and a further fellowship in paediatric ophthalmology at the Children’s University Hospital Temple Street, both under the mentorship of Prof. Michael O’Keeffe. In 2010 she was awarded the Dr. Richard Steevens’ Scholarship for SpR training abroad  and carried out a further fellowship in paediatric ophthalmology and adult and paediatric strabismus at the Hospital for Sick Children (Sickkids) Toronto and Toronto Western Hospitals. She was awarded the J. Donald Morin Fellows Award by Sickkids.

Special Interests

Her special interests include cataract surgery, strabismus, paediatric ophthalmology, laser eye surgery, collamer lenses, cross linking, general ophthalmology.

Clinical Research

Ms. Kirwan became a consultant ophthalmic surgeon in 2013. She has maintained an active role in research of paediatric eye problems and eye laser surgery. To date she has published over 50 peer review papers and book chapters.
