About our services

Neurology is an area of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists diagnose, treat and manage conditions that affect the brain and spinal cord (known together as the central nervous system) and the nerves and muscles (or peripheral nervous system).

Neurology overlaps with a wide range of areas. For example, if a cardiac patient has a stroke, neurologists will be involved in the patient’s treatment to assess and treat any damage to the brain. Neurologists also treat diseases like meningitis, which can cause neurological damage.

The neurology department

At Mater Private Network, our consultant neurologists and supporting team members are highly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. Patients may be referred by a GP or another clinical specialist and seen in the consultant consultation rooms or they may be treated as an inpatient of the hospital.

There are over 5000 recognised neurological conditions. Some of the most common that we treat at Mater Private include:

  • Alzheimers and other forms of dementia
  • Blackouts
  • Brain tumours
  • Chronic neuropathic pain
  • Epilepsy
  • Headaches
  • Motor neuron disease (MND)
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson disease
  • Spinal cord diseases
  • Strokes

The diagnosis of new patients with neurological symptoms is often by clinical assessment – understanding the history of the symptoms and undertaking a physical examination.

The treatment of neurological conditions is specific to the condition being treated. Some conditions require medication, others therapies and others may require surgery.
