About the knee

The knee is the largest joint in the body. It is made up of the lower end of the femur (thigh bone), the tibia (shin) and the patella (kneecap) which slides into a groove on the end of the femur. Large ligaments attach to the femur and tibia to provide stability. The long thigh muscles give the knee strength. The ends of the bones are covered with a thick cushion of hard, white cartilage.

If knee cartilage is worn or damaged it causes the underlying bones to rub together producing knee pain and inflammation typical of knee arthritis.

Disease, arthritis or injury of the knee joint can result in:

  • Pain
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Reduced Function
