CT Scanning

Our team of Radiologist and Radiographers at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin are experts in obtaining and interpreting Computed Tomography (CT) scans.   We have a broad range of expertise among our 15 consultants, which enables us to provide high quality subspecialist imaging of all body regions.  All studies are reported by Consultant Radiologists and most tests are reported on the same day of examination.

The full range of CT services we offer includes:
• CT of the head (brain) and neck
• CT of the spine
• CT of the chest
• CT of the abdomen and pelvis (incl. liver, pancreas and kidneys)
• CT colonography (Virtual Colonography)
• CT angiography (e.g. head, neck, aorta, extremities)
• CT of the heart (cardiac CT, calcium scoring and coronary CT)

There are several options available for booking a scan at the Mater Private:

Online - On each services page you will find a request an appointment button on the right hand side of your screen. This will automatically email our team with your request. A member of the team will then be in touch to arrange a suitable date and time.

Email: An email can be sent to the team at xrayct@materprivate.ie

Phone:  You can call us on 01 885 8174 / 01 885 8172

Fax: You can fax a referral to 01 885 8693

Please Note: Some tests require the intravenous administration of a contrast agent. The radiology team will decide if this is required or not.  If a patient does require a contrast agent, we may contact you to request a recent renal profile blood test result.

Once a letter is received at the CT department, our appointments team will contact the patient directly and they will be offered a suitable appointment date and time. At the Mater Private, we generally acommodate CT scan requests within 5-10 working days.

Some CT examinations require patient preparation (eg. CT Colonography). If this is the case, we will inform the patient at the time of booking.

The actual time required for a CT scan is usually very short, less than 5 minutes in most cases.  However, in some cases it may require longer.

The patient will be able to leave immediately following the examination. They will be given a disc containing the images from their scan.  A Consultant Radiologist will interpret the study and for most examinations dictate the report on the same day. This report will be available on Healthlink and will be posted to the referring clinician.

At the Mater Private Hospital we have a number of direct settlement agreements in place with the various insurance companies:

  • The majority of CT scans are fully covered by Aviva, GLO, GMA and ESB
  • We have a direct settlement agreement in place with VHI and Laya for some oncology scans. This cover is for consultant referrals only.

A patient's level of cover will be discussed with them at the time of booking their appointment. Our insurance advisors will be happy to check a patient's level of cover at the Mater Private Hospital with their particular plan.

Our insurance helpline is available on 01 885 8177.

Alternatively you can email xrayaccounts@materprivate.ie.

In the event that your patient is not covered by his/her private health insurance, they will be advised on the cost of the scan at the time of booking.
