Robotic-Assisted Spinal Fusion Surgery

At the Mater Private Hospital Dublin, we are the first and only hospital in Ireland and the UK to offer the latest in robotic-assisted surgery to patients with spinal stenosis (compression) or spinal instability.

Patients who undergo this type of surgery can benefit from significantly reduced risk of complications, less post-operative pain, and shorter recovery times.

The ExcelsiusGPS™ robot enables improved visualisation and precision during surgery. Similar to a GPS navigation system in a car, the ExcelsiusGPS™ robot guides the placement of instruments and implants through a rigid robotic arm that orients the surgeon along a guided pathway.  Navigation provides feedback and real-time visualisation of the positioning of implants and instruments in relation to the patient’s anatomy.

This assists Mater Private surgeons in our Orthopaedic and Spine Centre to complete more complex, delicate and minimally invasive spinal procedures.  Robotic-assisted spine surgery offers many benefits to patients:

  • smaller incisions and safer surgery
  • reduced blood loss and muscle damage
  • less post-operative pain and improved outcomes
  • faster recovery and return to normal daily life
