Latest advances in cardiac care explored at Mater Private Network’s Dublin Heart Summit

Location: Dublin

Mater Private Network and CVRI Dublin recently hosted its annual Dublin Heart Summit at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), featuring a keynote address from Prof. Filippo Crea of Gemelli Hospital, Rome, who presented on what he described as the success story of Angina with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries, reflecting significant advances in the understanding and treatment of this complex cardiovascular condition.

Welcoming more than 450 GPs, cardiologists, and other healthcare professionals to explore the latest advances in cardiovascular care, this year’s Summit showcased the latest developments across diagnosis, treatment and prevention in cardiovascular disease, with leading national and international experts sharing insights on emerging therapies, new technologies and evolving approaches to care.

Dr. Róisín Colleran, Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Private Network, delivered a dedicated session on cardiovascular health in women, sharing insights from the inaugural Women’s Heart Summit and highlighting the importance of improving awareness, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in women. She referenced the under-representation of women in clinical trials, despite conditions such as spontaneous coronary artery dissection disproportionately impacting women, and the substantial sex variation in outcomes and response to heart failure therapies.

The wider programme included discussions on the latest guidelines for the treatment of cardiomyopathy and aortic valve disease, and the impact of lifestyle factors such as exercise and nutrition on atrial fibrillation. A session from Dr. Louise Boyd highlighted the complexity of deprescribing long-term medications, and Dr. Heather McKee shared some practical, realistic tools to support clinicians and health professionals to move beyond “good advice” toward approaches that recognise the real behavioural barriers patients face.

Now in its third year, the Dublin Heart Summit is organised by Mater Private Network and the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) Dublin, in association with the Dublin Cardiovascular Research Forum and supported by RCSI and the Irish Cardiac Society. The event aims to foster collaboration and highlight the newest innovations helping to improve patient outcomes in cardiovascular medicine

Speaking about the importance of the Dublin Heart Summit, Prof. Robert Byrne, Director of Cardiology at Mater Private Network and Professor of Cardiovascular research at RCSI, said: The Dublin Heart Summit continues to grow as an important forum for sharing knowledge and advancing cardiovascular care, bringing together expertise from across Ireland and internationally. A key focus for us is ensuring that the latest advances in research and treatment translate into real improvements for patients.

“This year, we are also building on the momentum of our inaugural Women’s Heart Summit, recognising the need to better understand and address how heart disease presents and is treated in women. By broadening these conversations, we can move towards more inclusive and effective care for all patients.”
