Meet the Pharmacy Team

Behind every patient prescription and specialist treatment is a dedicated pharmacy team working to ensure safe, effective and timely medication care. From the dispensary floor to the aseptic unit, our pharmacists, technicians and specialist staff collaborate every day to support patients and clinical teams across the hospital.

Neasa Chambers, Acting Pharmacy Manager, oversees the safe and efficient delivery of pharmacy services across the hospital, with a strong focus on patient safety, innovation and team development.

During our conversation, we learn more about the team, their work and some of the exciting developments taking shape in the department.

What different roles make up the department, and how do they work together?

Our pharmacy department is made up of two core teams: the dispensary team and the aseptic unit. The dispensary team includes our clinical pharmacists, who are based on the wards, while the aseptic unit specialises in preparing complex medications such as systemic anti-cancer therapies.

Both teams include pharmacists and technicians, and we also have several specialist roles across areas such as medication safety, cardiology, clinical trials and antimicrobial stewardship. Everyone works closely together, and that collaboration is essential in ensuring we deliver safe, high-quality care across the hospital.

How does the pharmacy team contribute to patient care?

Our goal every day is to ensure the appropriate, safe, and efficient supply of medication to patients. We do this by supplying medications to clinical areas, clinically reviewing prescriptions to ensure they are safe and suitable for patients, reviewing medications on admission and supporting the preparation of specialist treatments.

We also play an important role in maintaining medication safety standards and developing policies that support best practice across the hospital. The pharmacy team is involved at every stage of the patient journey, and patient safety is always at the centre of what we do.

What does collaboration look like between pharmacy and the wider clinical teams, from consultants to nursing staff?

Collaboration is a huge part of our role. We work closely with consultants, nursing staff and multidisciplinary teams throughout the hospital to support safe prescribing, medication management, and patient care.

By working together, we can ensure patients receive the most appropriate treatments while maintaining the highest standards of medication safety. Pharmacy is a key part of the wider clinical team, and strong communication is essential.

Are there any exciting developments or initiatives happening in your department?

It is a really exciting time for our department. We are currently planning to implement dispensing robotics, which will significantly improve our medication supply workflows by reducing manual processes and improving efficiency.

This technology will also help free up more of our team’s time, allowing staff to spend more time supporting patient care. Our aseptic unit is also exploring future compounding automation, which is using robotic systems, software, and advanced technology to prepared personalised medications. This will further enhance how we work and these developments are an important step forward for both our team and our patients.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

In my role, I’m responsible for the operational, administrative and financial functions of the department. I manage the safe supply of medications to clinical areas, liaise with other departments and coordinate medication shortages and product recalls.

What I enjoy most is managing and supporting our team. We have a very hardworking group of people, and it is incredibly rewarding to see them achieve their goals and continue to improve how medication is managed across the hospital.

Seeing the positive impact our team has on patient safety and care is very fulfilling, and it is an exciting time to be part of a department that is continuing to evolve and grow.
