About

Education & Experience

Prof. Barry O’Reilly has been a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in Cork since 2004, initially at St. Finbarr’s and later in Cork University Maternity Hospital and the Bon Secours Hospital.

He will continue in his role at CUMH but he will provide private antenatal visits for his obstetric patients along with private gynaecology appointments in his new consulting rooms and surgery exclusively at Mater Private Hospital in Cork.

Prof. O’Reilly has vast experience in labour ward obstetrics, complicated deliveries and all aspects of gynaecological and pelvic floor reconstructive surgery. He has specific international expertise in the prevention and management of pelvic floor injury during childbirth.  As such, a large part of his private obstetric practice is looking after women who have had previous difficult or traumatic pregnancies.

He graduated from RCSI, Dublin in 1991 and moved to Guys and St. Thomas’ Hospitals in London to undergo specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology. During this time, he also completed a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) by research.  Following completion of specialist training in the UK, he was selected to a sub-specialty fellowship training program in urogynaecology and pelvic floor reconstructive surgery at the Mercy Hospital for Women and Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. During this time he was also appointed consultant obstetrician, gynaecologist and senior lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology with the University of Melbourne.

On returning to Ireland he set up the Urogynaecology Centre in CUMH and he brought together national experts in Urogynaecology and Female Urology to form the Continence Foundation of Ireland (CFI). He has been on the educational, scientific and public relations committees of the International Urogynaecology Association and he is an executive board member of the European Urogynaecological Association.

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships

He is a past member of the executive board of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Ireland and on the National Clinical Advisory Group which is responsible for the development of national evidence-based guidelines for obstetrics and gynaecology. He is on the editorial board of the International Urogynaecology Journal and also reviews research manuscripts for many other medical journals.

Prof. O’Reilly has written several book chapters as well as many peer reviewed publications. His current leadership role as director of ASSERT at UCC is responsible for addressing the training needs for all disciplines within the health care sector.
