About

Education & Experience  

A native of Cork and graduate of RCSI, Mary completed her internship at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin and basic surgical training at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin.  

Following her time in the laboratory, Mary transferred to the New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell general surgery residency program to continue her clinical training. In 2009, she and her husband returned to complete their specialist training on Irish soil. Following six years of training as a specialist registrar in general surgery, Mary became a Fellow of the RCSI (FRCS), and received her Certificate of Specialist Training (CST) in general surgery with a special interest in breast surgery. 

In 2015, Mary and her family moved to Glasgow. She was awarded a scholarship to undertake a master’s degree in clinical genetics at the University of Glasgow, and underwent further fellowship training in reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery. In 2016, she was appointed as a consultant general and breast surgeon, in the NHS, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. 

 

Special Interests  

Passionate about patient care, personalised medicine, optimising health outcomes and wellness. She has been appointed to a post as a consultant general surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery, and cancer genetics in MPC. In addition to her clinical practice, she has been appointed as the Medical Director of Mater Private Wellness Programme. 

 

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships  

Motivated to explore the international horizons of surgical training and research, she undertook a scholarship-funded research fellowship in molecular biology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York. Under the mentorship of Dr Tari King, her grant-funded work in breast cancer has been widely published, presented nationally and internationally, and in 2007 Mary was awarded the Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Basic Science Research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In addition she has co-authored several book chapters and lectured at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
