Education & Experience
Mr. Shane Whitlow, MD, BA Mod Genetics, MCh, MRCPI, FRCSI(Ophth), FEBO, FRCOphth (UK), is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Retinal Specialist in both the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Mater Private Network in Dublin, and a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (genetics).
Mr. Whitlow carried out his postgraduate training in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery through the Irish College of Ophthalmologists' Higher Surgical Training Programme, under the Royal College of Surgeons. He subsequently undertook a further two years of internationally renowned sub-specialist training in vitreoretinal surgery in centres of excellence in the United Kingdom (the Royal Free Hospital in London and at Tennent Institute, Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow). Mr. Whitlow returned to Ireland and was appointed to a consultant position in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Mr. Whitlow is active academically with an extensive publication record and his primary research interests include retinal disorders and secondary IOL (Intraocular Lens) procedures.
Following post-graduate training in general internal medicine at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, he was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2016.
He commenced his ophthalmology training in Ireland, and at the end of his surgical training he received his Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST), indicating proficiency in all aspects of ophthalmic medicine and surgery in 2022.
Mr. Whitlow is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI Ophth), a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London (FRCOphth), Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI), Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmologists (FEBO), and a member of the Irish College of Ophthalmology (ICO). He is also a member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), and the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons (BEAVRS).
