About

Education & Experience

Dr. John Maxwell is a senior health executive, board director, and emergency physician with over 25 years’ experience across the UK and Australia. He has held senior executive roles in some of the largest healthcare organisations in both countries, including as Executive Medical Director of one of the UK’s largest NHS trusts and Director of Medical Services at one of Australia’s largest private hospitals.

Dr. Maxwell has founded and led multiple successful ventures, including an emergency medicine company and a digital health business. He is known for building high-performing clinical teams, implementing innovative care models, and driving strategic change through data-led decision-making and collaborative leadership.

In March 2025 Dr. Maxwell joined Mater Private Network as Chief Medical Officer. In this role, he serves as the Chief Medical Advisor to the Group Board and participates in the Medical Advisory Boards of Mater Private hospitals in both Dublin and Cork. He also has a clinical role in the Emergency Medicine Departments of both hospitals.

Special Interests

Dr. Maxwell brings deep expertise in clinical governance, system reform, and strategic leadership—having led a nationally commissioned review of unscheduled care in Northern Ireland and delivered complex transformation programmes across both public and private sectors.

Dr. Maxwell currently serves on several boards and advisory groups spanning healthcare and technology, where he is recognised for his clarity, credibility, and execution focus.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine, and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, he also holds an MSc in Medical Leadership and an Executive MBA with Distinction from Warwick Business School. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
