Mater Private Network’s Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre in Limerick completes its first lung stereotactic radiotherapy treatment
Mater Private Network’s Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre in Limerick has delivered its first lung stereotactic radiotherapy treatment, representing a significant milestone for this specialist centre.
Stereotactic radiotherapy is a non-surgical form of cancer treatment which delivers a more precisely targeted radiation treatment compared to traditional therapy.
This procedure comes after the recent expansion of the Mater Private Network radiotherapy service in Limerick which will give public and private cancer patients across the Mid-West access to a broader range of specialist expertise and advanced treatment options closer to home.

Speaking on the milestone, Prof. Daniel Cagney, Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology at Mater Private Network said, “This is a fantastic milestone for the Limerick team and, most importantly, for patients in the Mid-West. Stereotactic radiotherapy uses advanced equipment to deliver high doses of radiation with pinpoint accuracy, and it is commonly used for lung tumours that can’t be removed with surgery. We’re delighted that patients can now access this specialised treatment in Limerick, close to home and to their families.”
Sharon Kierce, Radiotherapy Services Manager at Mater Private Network’s Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre said, “This achievement reflects the collaboration, months of rigourous planning, and expertise across our entire team. From the radiation oncologists and medical physicists who designed the complex treatment plans, to the radiation therapists who delivered the treatment, and our specialised nursing and support staff - every person had a vital role in delivering this treatment. By successfully launching this programme, our team has not only expanded our clinical services but also improved access to another form of highly specialised treatment for members of our community, right on their doorstep.”
Located on the University Hospital Limerick campus, Mater Private Network’s Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre forms an integral part of the Mid-Western Cancer Centre and treats both public and private patients. The centre provides care to approximately 100 people each day.
