Mater Private Network appoints internationally renowned cardiologist to lead Cork Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory
Mater Private Network has announced the appointment of internationally renowned interventional cardiologist Dr. Simon Walsh as Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at Mater Private Cork, further strengthening advanced cardiovascular care for patients across Cork and the wider Munster region.
A recognised leader in complex coronary intervention, Dr. Walsh brings decades of experience treating some of the most challenging forms of coronary artery disease. As Director of Mater Private Cork's Complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) service, his appointment expands access to world-leading expertise for patients across Cork and the wider Munster region, allowing many to receive highly specialised treatment closer to home.
"Our service specialises in treating patients who have previously been told that nothing can be done," said Dr. Walsh. "I'm a firm believer that every patient deserves to know that every reasonable option has been explored. Many of these procedures are performed by two consultant interventional cardiologists working alongside a multidisciplinary team in real time, bringing together the expertise needed to treat some of the most complex cases."
Dr. Walsh graduated in medicine from Queen's University Belfast before completing specialist training in cardiology and advanced interventional fellowships in Vancouver, Canada. He subsequently spent 17 years as a Consultant Cardiologist at the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust, where he helped establish one of the UK's leading centres for Complex PCI.
Internationally recognised for his expertise, Dr. Walsh is a sought-after educator, teaching advanced coronary intervention techniques to cardiologists throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

As part of his role, Dr. Walsh will also contribute to the work of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI), a collaboration between Mater Private Network and RCSI. Dr Walsh is actively involved in this research, enabling access for patients in Munster to innovative therapies, medicinal products and medical devices.
