About
Education & Experience
Dr. Simon J Walsh graduated in medicine from Queen’s University, Belfast in 1997 and completed an MD in 2004 at the same institution. He undertook a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology in Vancouver, Canada in 2006 before returning to Northern Ireland. He was Consultant Cardiologist at the Southern Health & Social Care Trust from 2007 to September 2009, and at Belfast Health & Social Care Trust from September 2009 to 2026. During this time, the Belfast Trust developed into a nationally and internationally renowned centre for teaching and training in complex PCI, built around live cases. Dr. Walsh has also worked internationally as an educator, teaching advanced techniques for complex PCI and CTO PCI in the UK, Europe, Australia, Asia and North America. Dr. Walsh joined Mater Private Network in Cork in May 2026 as Consultant Cardiologist and Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.
Special Interests
Dr. Walsh is internationally renowned as a leader in the development of advanced interventional procedures and is also known internationally for his roles in education and research within the same field. He has led the development of advanced interventional techniques for complex coronary disease including the treatment of chronic total occlusions. He has performed thousands of coronary intervention procedures and has mentored other physicians globally to help develop their skills.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Dr. Walsh has published over 130 peer reviewed manuscripts. His research interests include PCI, coronary artery disease, defibrillation, acute coronary syndromes and chronic total occlusions. He has been a major contributor to the evidence for left main intervention (Noble study), intravascular imaging (including the October study and IVUS123), the management of chronic total occlusions (Consistent CTO), bifurcations (Celtic bifurcation study), ischaemic cardiomyopathy (Revived study) and the management of coronary disease for patients who have had a prior coronary bypass operation (Proctor study). He has co-written the British Cardiac Society/Royal College of Physicians of London joint submission to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence regarding the use of Clopidogrel in acute coronary syndromes.
Dr. Walsh has participated in numerous educational live case broadcasts to regional, national and international meetings. National events include the St James’ Annual PCI course (Dublin) Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (Vancouver 2006), Anglo-Celtic PCI meeting (Glasgow) and Advanced Cardiovascular Intervention (London 2015). International meetings congresses include TCT (San Francisco 2015, TCT Connect 2020, TCT2021), CRT (Washington DC), C3 (Orlando), New York CTO Summit/CTO+, Africa PCR (2017) and CTO Fundamentals Live/ Optimal CTO.
