Meet Phoebe Cunneen - Receptionist
Hospital receptionists are often the first point of contact for patients a upon arrival. They play a key role in setting a reassuring tone, offering a warm welcome while also providing essential information about appointments and what to expect during the visit. Behind the scenes, they help keep things running smoothly by coordinating with the wider care team and managing the flow of care.
Since joining our team in 2023, Phoebe Cunneen, Receptionist at Mater Private Network’s Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre in Limerick, has become a reassuring presence within the centre, helping patients feel at ease the moment they walk through the door.

Can you please describe your role as a receptionist? What does a typical day look like?
As a receptionist, I am the first person patients see when they arrive for their appointment. I check them in, let them know who they will be meeting that day, whether it is our nursing team or dietitian, and I am always there to answer any questions they might have, in person or over the phone.
My role is centred around creating a welcoming environment. Patients are often nervous or unsure of what to expect, especially at the beginning of their treatment. I ensure they feel informed, comfortable, and reassured that they are in good hands from the moment they arrive.
How do you collaborate with the wider team to ensure smooth patient flow and care?
Collaboration is a key part of my role. I maintain regular communication with the radiotherapy team to ensure clarity around the daily schedule, particularly in the event of delays or last-minute changes. This helps us manage patient flow efficiently and minimise disruption to appointments.
I also work closely with our Patient Coordinator to support the administrative side of care. Together, we confirm appointment times, provide patients with any necessary preparation details, and handle rescheduling or queries as needed. This coordinated approach helps create a more streamlined and reassuring experience for patients throughout their treatment.

What do you enjoy the most about your role?
What I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to build relationships with patients throughout the course of their treatment. Many patients attend our centre daily over several weeks, and during that time, I become a familiar and reassuring presence at the front desk.
Supporting them on their journey is incredibly meaningful. I take pride in helping during a very challenging period in their lives, and I aim to make each interaction as positive and comfortable as possible.
How do you support the patient's journey in your role?
I understand that attending radiotherapy treatment can be a daunting experience. My role is to create a welcoming, and friendly environment from the moment a patient arrives.
I provide clear information about appointments and any necessary preparation, and I am always available to address questions or concerns as they arise. By offering consistent support, I aim to reduce anxiety and help patients feel more at ease throughout their treatment.
