Healthy Eating for a Healthy Heart

Making a conscious decision to eat a healthy diet and live a healthy lifestyle can help you improve your heart health. This is especially true if you have a heart condition such as atrial fibrillation, which is the most common heart rhythm disorder.

Aim to eat a heart-healthy diet which is turn will help you maintain a healthy weight.

Include foods like:

  • Vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Low-fat or fat-free dairy products
  • Proteins such as lean meats, nuts, seeds and beans
  • Foods low in salt, added sugars, saturated fat and trans fat
  • Limit or avoid alcohol as this may act as a trigger

If you have diabetes, it's important to keep your blood sugar levels well controlled.

Your cardiologist and arrhythmia nurse will recommend other healthy lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, getting regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and keeping your cholesterol and blood pressure levels under control.
