Education & Experience

Mr. Rory Murphy is a Consultant Eye Surgeon at Mater Private Network, specialising in high-volume and complex cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery and laser procedures. He also holds a public appointment as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH), Dublin, where he works in the high-volume cataract unit.

He was awarded his Undergraduate Medical Degree with Honours from University College Dublin (MB BCh BAO) before completing postgraduate training in Surgical Ophthalmology with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Irish College of Ophthalmologists. During this time, he also completed a Master’s in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (University of Ulster) and a Diploma in Healthcare Economics (National University of Ireland).

 

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships

Mr. Murphy has a keen research interest in glaucoma and was awarded a Medical Doctorate (MD) by University College Dublin, as well as the Irish College of Ophthalmologists Annual Research Bursary, for his research exploring mechanotransduction at the lamina cribrosa.

Following completion of his postgraduate training, he was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST), Fellowship of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO), and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI Ophthalmology). He subsequently undertook a Subspecialist Fellowship in Surgical Glaucoma and Complex Cataract Surgery at the world-renowned Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, before returning to Dublin in 2023 to take up his current Consultant post at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital.
