About

Education & Experience

A native of Co. Kildare, he is a graduate of UCD (2004). Following his internship year, Padhraig secured a three-year orthopaedic research fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), New York. HSS is the oldest orthopaedic hospital in the United States and regularly ranked number one for orthopaedics in the US. During this time, he was appointed as the iscol computer assisted surgery (CAS) fellow, and  also served as the clinical co-ordinator for a Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) study in the setting lumbar spine fusion surgery. He was the co-recipient of an Arthritis Foundation Grant in 2008 and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) based on research into bone physiology conducted in New York. His time in New York was pivotal in forging both clinical and research collaborations internationally, and a catalyst in generating more than 80 peer-reviewed research publications and several book chapters.

He returned to Ireland in 2009 to continue his surgical training at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin. He was appointed to the specialist training scheme for trauma & orthopaedic surgery in 2011, commencing with a year of trauma surgery at Cork University Hospital. He was co-winner of the Caboud Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in 2010, and in 2014 he was awarded an EFFORT Travelling Fellowship which involved visiting centres of excellence for trauma & orthopaedic surgery in Florence & Turin.

In 2015, he relocated to Glasgow, to further develop his skills in joint replacement at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital. Golden Jubilee is a national centre of excellence for hip and knee replacement, and a leading European centre for computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery. During his year at the Golden Jubilee, Padhraig further developed his experience in computer-navigated knee replacement surgery and completed a post-graduate diploma in principles of computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery. In 2016, he spent his final year of specialist training at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, a Level 1 Trauma Centre and one of the largest hospitals in the UK.

Following on from his experience in the UK, Padhraig embarked on further sub-specialty fellowship training, focusing on lower limb arthroplasty at Centre Orthopédique Santy in Lyon.

From there, he travelled to Belgium where he worked at Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL) with an expert in hip reconstruction including the anterior approach to the hip.  Finally, prior to his return to Cork, he was a visiting fellow at the Clinique de la Côte d'Emeraude in St Malo, France specialising in navigated hip and knee replacement surgery.
