About
Mr. Jamie Martin-Smith is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeon with subspecialty interests in breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast and abdominal surgery.
Education & Experience
Mr. Martin-Smith graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2008 and completed the Irish plastic surgery specialty training in 2018. In 2015 he was awarded a Masters in Aesthetic Surgery by Queen Mary University London, during which time he completed his research and dissertation on preventative strategies to reduce implant infection in breast augmentation.
Mr. Martin-Smith took up his first consultant role in the world-renowned cancer hospital, The Royal Marsden in Chelsea, London in 2018, following completion of a microvascular oncological reconstructive fellowship in the same unit. This consultant role involved reconstruction of major oncological defects including breast, limb, thoracic and perineal cases. His primary focus was microsurgical breast reconstruction. He completed further aesthetic training with some of London's most well-respected aesthetic and reconstructive surgeons, operating out of The London Clinic, The Lister Clinic and 108 Harley Street. He returned to Ireland in June 2019 to take up a permanent HSE consultant position in Beaumont and Connolly hospitals. His private practise is primarily based out of Mater Private Network in Dublin, with a focus on driving forward reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery options.
Special Interests
In July 2022, Mr. Martin-Smith commenced autologous (DIEP) breast reconstructive services in Mater Private Network Dublin. Since then, he has developed the unit into the second largest own tissue breast reconstructive unit in the country (largest private unit) providing immediate, delayed and salvage breast reconstruction in breast cancer patients. Mater Private Network is the only private hospital in Ireland in which this complex surgery is performed for immediate breast cancer reconstruction.
Mr. Martin-Smith is an active advocate for breast reconstruction and women’s breast health. He is an active participant in patient education via The Marie Keating Foundation, Breast Cancer Ireland and the HSE.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Mr. Martin-Smith is nationally and internationally highly regarded in the field of complex breast reconstruction surgery. He regularly speaks academically for multiple societies and professional bodies including The Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons, The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, The Royal College of Surgeons, and others.
His primary research interests are focused on autologous breast reconstruction, perforator flap surgery and early recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways following reconstructive surgery. He has ongoing research commitments involving robotic breast surgery and immediate reconstructions.
He is heavily involved in the training of plastic surgeons nationally at all levels. He is clinical lead for training in Beaumont hospital, manages an internationally sought-after complex breast reconstruction fellowship programme, and examines annually in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).
