Education & Experience
Mr. Derek Cawley (PhD) is a medical graduate of NUI Galway, and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, with Masters Degrees in Medical Sciences and later, in Surgery. He recently completed his PhD on degenerative vacuum discs.
His specialist spinal surgery training has taken him to world renowned centres abroad including Institute de la Colonne Vertebrale, Bordeaux and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London, UK.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Mr. Cawley has previously directed the spinal studies module on the UCD Masters Degree in Physiotherapy. As a result of his extensive experience in musculoskeletal trauma, he is the editor and creator of the popular patient website
He has chaired the PatientLine working group with Eurospine, the European Spine Society, now leading their environmental sustainability taskforce. He has also published widely in international surgical journals. He has been a board member with the Road Safety Authority, Irish Doctors for the Environment and is the clinical director of sustainability at Mater Private Hospital.
He is also currently working on pre-clinical projects concerning the future development of augmented reality software applications in the operating room with mixed reality technology for surgery.
