About

Mr. David Gallagher is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Mater Private Network, Dublin, and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.

Education & Experience 

Mr. Gallagher graduated in medicine from Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (MB BCh BAO LRCP & SI) in 2014. He completed the ophthalmology training programme in Ireland and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland for Ophthalmology (FRSCI Ophth.) in 2024. He completed a sub-specialty fellowship in Cornea, External Eye Disease and Uveitis at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital Dublin in 2025.

Prior to this, Mr. Gallagher was awarded a BSc Optometry at Dublin Institute of Technology and awarded the Fellowship of the Association of Optometrist Ireland (BSc Optom.) in 2005. He completed a Masters in Clinical Vision Science at University of Ulster (MSc) in 2017, followed by the European Board of Ophthalmology Diploma (FEBO) in 2021 and a Diploma in Leadership and Management at UCD (PGDip) in 2024.

Special Interests 

Mr. Gallagher specialises in cataract surgery and corneal transplant surgery, including penetrating keratoplasty, anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), posterior lamellar keratoplasty (DMEK).  He also specialises in the management of keratoconus and external eye disease diagnosis and management.

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships 

Mr. Gallagher has a keen interest in research and has published in national and international peer-reviewed journals. His subspecialty interest stems from early work in optics, achieving a BSc in Optometry, and additional research undertaken during his Masters in Clinical Vision Science. Following completion of his postgraduate training, he was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST), the Fellowship of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO), and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI Ophthalmology). He subsequently undertook a Subspecialist Fellowship in Cornea, Ocular Inflammatory Disorders, and Complex Cataract Surgery at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin, before commencing his current consultant post at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Mater Private Network.
