Education & Experience 

Dr. Waqar Aziz is a Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Private Network, Cork, with specialist expertise in advanced multimodality cardiac imaging. He provides comprehensive assessment and management of a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, with a particular focus on assessment of coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease.

Dr. Aziz grew up in Castlebar, County Mayo, graduated in medicine from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and completed his early postgraduate internal medicine training in the west of Ireland. He subsequently undertook specialist cardiology training in South London, UK, followed by advanced subspecialty training in cardiac imaging at major tertiary and quaternary centres, including Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London.

His advanced imaging expertise spans transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, and cardiac CT, including coronary CT angiography and CT-based coronary functional assessment. He has also been closely involved in peri-procedural imaging for complex structural heart interventions within multidisciplinary heart teams at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London.

Dr. Aziz was awarded a PhD from King’s College London for his clinical research focused on novel applications of cardiac CT in stable and acute coronary syndromes. His academic work has resulted in publications in international peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international cardiology meetings.

He was awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology in 2023 and subsequently completed a post-CCT fellowship in stress echocardiography at St George’s University Hospital, London.


Special Interests 

Dr. Aziz has a particular interest in the advanced imaging assessment of coronary and valvular heart disease, using a multimodality approach including:

  • Coronary CT angiography, calcium scoring and CT-derived functional assessment
  • Transthoracic echocardiography
  • Transoesophageal echocardiography (including peri-procedural imaging)
  • Stress echocardiography

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships 

Dr. Aziz has contributed to the field of advanced cardiac imaging through his involvement in clinical research in London, UK. He also holds an MSc in medical device innovation from BioInnovate Ireland at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He has a keen interest in medical education and has delivered undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at King’s College London and City St. George’s University of London. He has been a member of the teaching faculty at the Heart Failure MSc at City St. George’s University of London, and BitePACES MRCP and St. George’s University Hospital Transoesophageal echocardiography courses in London. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and also holds Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (London).

He is fully accredited in transthoracic echocardiography with the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) and European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) and in transoesophageal echocardiography with EACVI. He also holds Level II accreditation with the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging/British Society of Cardiovascular CT (BSCI/BSCCT) and is further completing advanced accreditation in stress echocardiography with the British Society of Echocardiography and Level III accreditation in cardiac CT with BSCI/BSCCT.

Professional Qualifications: MB BCh BAO; MRCP(I), MRCP(UK), MSc, PhD.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Aziz enjoys playing and watching cricket and football, reading history and spending quality time with his family, friends and three cats.
