About

Dr. John-Paul Carpenter is a Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Private Network, Dublin.

Education & Experience 

Dr. John-Paul Carpenter graduated in 1996 from the University of London, UK (MBBS degree with Distinction in Medicine). His subspecialty training in Cardiology was in southern England (Wessex Deanery) from 2003 onwards. Between 2007 and 2010, he was the NIH (National Institutes of Health) Research Fellow at Royal Brompton Hospital in London, gaining a postgraduate MD(Res) degree from Imperial College. This was followed by an advanced Fellowship in Cardiac Imaging and Heart Failure in Southampton. His Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology was awarded in 2012. He then worked as a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton Hospital before moving to Dorset University Hospitals (Bournemouth and Poole) in 2013. In April 2023, he was recruited to set up and lead cardiovascular imaging services (CT and MRI) for M42 at Healthpoint Hospital, Abu Dhabi.  In July 2025 he joined Mater Private Network in Dublin.

Special Interests 

Dr. Carpenter’s main area of specialist interest is in advanced cardiovascular imaging, in particular cardiac MRI (CMR) and CT. He holds the highest level of certification (Level 3) in CMR in Europe (EACVI) and the US (SCMR), as well as level 3 European certification for cardiac CT. He is an EACVI-certified Multimodality Cardiovascular Imaging Specialist and also has full accreditation for adult transthoracic echocardiography from the British Society of Echocardiography.

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships 

Dr. Carpenter’s research interest focused on cardiac MRI - he was instrumental in developing the T2-star (T2*) technique for non-invasive iron quantification in the heart and was awarded the National Institutes of Health Research (NIHR) Thesis Prize from Imperial College, London in 2011.

He has been a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London since 1999 and a Fellow (FRCP) since 2017. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), and a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (FSCMR).

He is currently Co-Chair for Cardiovascular Imaging Certification for the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), responsible for seven different certification programmes and is a board member of the EACVI. Previous roles have included EACVI Exam Board Chair for CMR and Co-Chair for CMR Lab Accreditation. He was a founding Board Member of the British Cardio-Oncology Society (BC-OS) and has a keen interest in teaching and learning. He has been an invited speaker at multiple local, national and international meetings in Europe, USA, the Middle East, Asia and South America.
