About

Education & Experience 

Dr. David Sawbridge is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Mater Private Network, Cork.

Dr. Sawbridge’s undergraduate training in medicine was completed through Edinburgh University, graduating in 2010. He was appointed to the Clinical Academic Track in Neurology from 2010-2012 and then as “run-through” on the Gastroenterology Clinical Academic Track to completion of his specialist medical training in 2020, based in the Mersey region of the UK. Dr. Sawbridge completed his sub-speciality fellowships in inflammatory bowel disease at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and a further National Senior Clinical Fellowship in advanced clinical nutrition (intestinal failure) at Salford Royal Infirmary, one of two national intestinal rehabilitation units. He was a locum consultant gastroenterologist at Cork University Hospital from 2020-2022. He joined Mater Private Network in 2022. 

Special Interests 

His special interests revolve around inflammatory bowel disease, clinical nutrition (malnutrition and artificial nutrition) and the gut microbiome.

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships 

Dr. Sawbridge’s research and teaching is based around his clinical special interests, in collaboration with UCC and the Alimentary Pharmacobiotic Centre, as clinical senior lecturer. He particularly focuses on the interaction between IBD and nutrition via the microbiome. He is a member of several national and international societies in the areas of IBD and clinical nutrition, including the Irish Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (IRSPEN), the British Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (BAPEN), the European Society for Clinical Nutrition (ESPEN) and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO). Dr. Sawbridge has been awarded research/fellowship grants from Cancer Research UK, the Wellcome Trust and United European Gastroenterology.
