About

Dr. Damien Collison is a consultant interventional cardiologist, the Deputy Director of Cardiology at Mater Private Network in Dublin.

Education & Experience 

Dr. Damien Collison graduated with an honours degree in medicine (MB BCh BAO BA) from Trinity College Dublin in 2007 and attained membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) in 2010. The Irish Cardiac Society awarded him the Bristol Myers Squibb traveling fellowship in 2015 to support a senior fellowship in complex coronary intervention in the United Kingdom. Having completed basic and higher specialist medical training in university teaching hospitals in Ireland and Scotland, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland conferred him with his certificate of completion of specialist training in cardiology in 2017. 

From 2016 to 2020 he undertook clinical research fellowships at the University of Glasgow and Scotland’s quaternary cardiac referral centre, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital. He was appointed as a consultant interventional cardiologist at the Golden Jubilee and Queen Elizabeth University Hospitals in 2020. He was selected as a delegate for the British Cardiovascular Society / American College of Cardiology Emerging Leaders Programme 2020/21.

Dr. Collison was conferred with a postgraduate research doctoral degree (MD) by the University of Glasgow in 2023 and became an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the university in 2025. He returned to Ireland in September 2026 to take up a position as Deputy Director of Cardiology at the Mater Private Network.


Special Interests 

Coronary angiography, comprehensive coronary physiology assessment, percutaneous coronary intervention (angioplasty / stenting) with expertise in adjunctive intracoronary imaging and advanced calcium modification techniques, coronary microvascular dysfunction, myocardial injury with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA), acute & chronic coronary syndromes.


Clinical Research & Professional Memberships 

Dr. Collison is an internationally recognised expert in the field of coronary physiology. He has co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles with a particular focus on physiology-guided coronary stenting procedures and the management of coronary microvascular dysfunction. Between 2016 and 2020 he was employed as a clinical research fellow by University of Glasgow / NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, supporting patient enrolment in their cardiovascular clinical trials portfolios. During that time, he co-developed and project managed an investigator-initiated randomised controlled clinical trial which formed the basis of his doctoral thesis on physiology-guided optimisation of percutaneous coronary intervention. “TARGET-FFR” was selected for presentation as a late-breaking clinical trial at TCT, the world’s largest interventional cardiology meeting, in 2020 and won the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society’s Young Investigator of the Year Award in 2021. 

Dr. Collison has served as an investigator for numerous impactful cardiovascular clinical trials and maintains active research collaborations with a global network of academic clinicians. He has contributed to the leading cardiology academic journals through authorship, peer review and invited editorial commentary and continues to deliver education and training as an invited speaker / faculty member at major national and international interventional cardiology meetings.

He holds specialist registration in cardiology with the both the Irish Medical Council & the General Medical Council (UK). He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Irish Cardiac Society (ICS), the Scottish Cardiac Society (SCS), the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS), the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Intervention (EAPCI), the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC).
