Dr. Abdul R Maher, MBChB, BmedSci, PhD, is a Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Private Network, Dublin.

Education & Recent Experience

Dr. Abdul Maher qualified in June 1998 with an MBChB as well as a BMedSci (Hons)[physiology] and went on to qualify from Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2002. He subsequently achieved accreditation in Transthoracic Echocardiography from the British Society of Echocardiography in 2011. In 2013, he undertook training in cardiology, cardiac imaging and complex devices in the West Midlands, UK. He followed this with Level 3 Certification from the Society of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in 2019, and accreditation in Cardiac Implantable Devices from the British Heart Rhythm Society in 2013. He was awarded Doctor of Philosophy – PhD Cardiology from Birmingham University in July 2013.

In 2018 Dr. Maher was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Birmingham, UK, where he worked until 2026. During his time in Birmingham, he was the longest serving consultant reporting on Cardiac MRI. He was actively involved in training programmes to support consultant colleagues and trainees to achieved SCMR accreditation. He has contributed to imaging services including stress echocardiography and transoesophageal echocardiography and initiated subcutaneous ICD and conduction system pacing programmes.

Special Interests

Dr. Maher is passionate about the role of cardiac imaging in the diagnosis and management of cardiac disease. He also has a strong interest in Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices having seen the transformative effect that these can have on an individual’s life.

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships

During his PhD, Dr. Maher focussed on the role of transported nitric oxide in health and heart failure. Dr. Maher’s clinical research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed publications, and he continues to be active in research and the supervision of PhD students. He has recently been Principal Investigator for a number of studies in the UK.
