Friendship, Recovery and Second Chances: Inside a Cardiac Rehab Reunion in Cork

Location: Cork

Mater Private Network Cork recently hosted a special reunion event for participants of its highly successful Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme, bringing together patients who have completed the six-week, medically supervised course designed to support recovery following cardiac surgery and cardiology procedures.

The programme focuses on education, lifestyle change and clinical support, empowering patients to take control of their long-term heart health. Evidence shows that participation in cardiac rehabilitation can increase life expectancy by up to five years and reduce the risk of death by 26%, delivering significantly improved lifelong outcomes for those living with cardiac disease.

The event highlighted both the clinical excellence of the programme and the strong sense of community it fosters among participants.

Dr John Foran, Clinical Lead for the Mater Private Network Cork’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme described it as “the best I’ve seen.”

“I’ve worked in cardiac care internationally for almost 40 years and this is one of the most effective and patient-centred rehabilitation programmes I’ve seen. It doesn’t just support recovery — it transforms long-term outcomes and gives patients the tools to take back control of their lives.”

Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Niamh Keenan also commended patients for their commitment to recovery:

“Surgery is just one step. The real goal is getting patients back to living fully again. Seeing people return to the things they love — whether that’s gardening, running or simply enjoying everyday life — is our goal. It’s about reclaiming life and confidence.”

The reunion also provided an opportunity for patients to reconnect, with many highlighting the friendships formed during their shared recovery journey.

Among those attending were friends and neighbours John Daly and Ger O’Regan from Youghal, who underwent the same surgery less than four months apart and completed the programme together.

John Daly spoke about the transformative impact of rehabilitation:

“Before surgery, I didn’t realise how much I’d slowed down. Now, everything has changed — not just physically, but in how I think about my health. The programme gives you structure, support and confidence. You’re not just recovering — you’re rebuilding your life.”

Ger O’Regan highlighted the personalised care provided by the team:

“What stands out is the personal care. You’re not just treated as a patient — you’re supported every step of the way. There’s always someone there to guide you, answer questions and keep you on track. That makes a huge difference to your recovery.”

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme at Mater Private Network Cork is delivered by a multidisciplinary team including clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists and psychotherapists working in close collaboration with cardiologists and surgeons to ensure a holistic approach to recovery and long-term heart health.

The reunion underscored the programme’s impact not only in improving clinical outcomes, but in helping patients return to active, fulfilling lives.
