Milestone as first stereotactic radiation treatment delivered at Mater Private‘s Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre in Limerick
The Mater Private Network team has delivered the first stereotactic radiation treatment at the Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre in Limerick, marking a significant advancement in the availability of complex cancer care in the mid-west.
This milestone reflects extensive collaboration across the network, involving clinical teams, allied health professionals, and all supporting functions. The introduction of stereotactic treatment required coordinated planning, shared expertise, and a strong multidisciplinary approach to ensure safe and effective delivery for patients.

Stereotactic radiotherapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that delivers highly precise, targeted doses of radiation to tumours while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Compared to traditional radiotherapy, which can involve daily treatments over several weeks, stereotactic treatment is typically delivered in fewer sessions. Its high level of accuracy not only enhances treatment effectiveness but can also reduce the risk of side effects, offering patients a more convenient treatment schedule and improved overall experience during their cancer care journey. This therapy is most commonly used to treat certain types of lung tumours that cannot be removed safely with surgery and is also highly effective on tumours in the prostate, liver, spine, pancreas, and abdomen.
Clinical leadership and knowledge-sharing across sites played a central role in establishing the programme, alongside detailed preparation in medical physics and the delivery of training to support the Limerick radiotherapy team. This achievement highlights the strength of an integrated cancer care network, made possible through the close collaboration of teams in Dublin and Limerick. The addition of stereotactic treatment enhances the Munster region’s ability to provide highly specialised cancer care and improves access for patients across the mid-west, allowing more people to receive advanced treatment closer to home.
Mr. Hugh Healy, director of cancer at Mater Private Network said: “This achievement reflects a shared commitment and collaboration across multiple departments, with colleagues from clinical, operational and support services all playing a role. Expanding complex care in Limerick will have a real and positive impact for patients across the mid-west.”
Prof. Daniel Cagney, clinical director of radiation oncology at Mater Private Network added: “Bringing stereotactic treatment to Limerick is a significant step forward and demonstrates the commitment of the team to delivering advanced, precise care. It also opens the door to further developments, ensuring patients can benefit from the latest treatment approaches closer to home.”
Dr. Lorraine Walsh, consultant radiation oncologist at the Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre concluded: “The level of teamwork, expertise and attention to detail involved in establishing this service has been exceptional. It’s a strong example of collaboration across the network and an important step in continuing to enhance treatment options for cancer patients.”
