Excellence in Motion - Mr. Pádhraig O'Loughlin in conversation with Nicola Tuthill, Irish hammer thrower

Excellence in Motion is a new interview-led series built around lived experience. By pairing clinical expertise with elite sporting insight, the series platforms honest discussion about how movement supports health, resilience, and quality of life at every stage.

Our third feature brings together Mr. Pádhraig O'Loughlin, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Mater Private Network, and Irish hammer thrower Nicola Tuthill. Their conversation traces Nicola's journey from picking up a plastic pink hammer at a local athletics camp aged 12, to becoming the youngest hammer thrower at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Along the way, they discuss the importance of multi-sport backgrounds, managing injury and recovery, nutrition for elite performance, bone health, and the science of sleep.

You can also watch or listen back to our previous episodes — episode one features Dr. Shane O'Hanlon, consultant geriatrician at Mater Private Network Dublin, in conversation with professional cyclist Lara Gillespie, and episode two brings together Prof. Mark Dayer, consultant cardiologist at Mater Private Network Dublin, and Irish sprint hurdler and record holder Sarah Lavin.
