Meet the Team - Radiographers

Within a hospital setting, radiographers are responsible for performing diagnostic imaging scans that help in diagnosis, treatment planning, and care delivery. Using advanced imaging equipment, including X-rays, CT scanners, and MRI machines, they provide essential insights into patients’ health conditions.

At Mater Private Network in Cork, Jane Duggan, CT Clinical Specialist, and Lindiwe Mereta, Radiation Protection Officer, work closely with the wider radiology team to deliver safe, efficient, and patient-centred diagnostic imaging.

CT (Computed Tomography) Clinical Specialist – Jane Duggan

In her role as a CT Clinical Specialist, Jane oversees the day-to-day operations of our two CT scanning rooms. Her work spans everything from routine scans to more complex procedures, such as cardiac imaging and angiograms. These scans require not only technical expertise but also the ability to adapt quickly to patient needs, especially in time-sensitive situations.

When patients are scheduled for surgery, or recovering from one, her goal is to scan them as promptly and comfortably as possible. Timely imaging can make a real difference during what is often a vulnerable time.

Patient care is central to everything we do at Mater Private Network. Whether someone is arriving from the Emergency Department or through a consultant clinic, we make it a priority to offer clear communication and reassurance. From explaining the scanning process to outlining when results can be expected, we strive to create a calm and informed experience that reduces anxiety.

Radiation Protection Officer - Lindiwe Mereta

As a Radiation Protection Officer, Lindiwe’s responsibility is to ensure the safety of everyone who may be exposed to radiation in the hospital, including patients, radiographers, consultants, nurses, cleaners, and porters. Together with her team, they follow stringent safety protocols to minimise exposure while still delivering high-quality diagnostic images.

There is a common misconception that radiographers simply “press buttons.” In reality, their profession demands a deep understanding of medical science, technology, and patient care. They apply this knowledge daily to carry out imaging safely and effectively, while prioritising accuracy and protection.

Most of the radiographers’ work happens behind the scenes, but the focus is always on maintaining a safe environment for both patients and staff.
