Senior Medical Scientist – Biochemistry & Haematology

Location: Northern Cross, Dublin 17 | Contract: Full-time, Permanent

About the Role

Mater Private Network is opening a new multi-disciplinary laboratory (Biochemistry and Haematology) within our Day Hospital at Northern Cross. We are now seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Medical Scientist to lead and coordinate this new laboratory service.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the establishment and delivery of a high-quality diagnostic laboratory service within a leading private healthcare organisation.

 

Role Responsibilities

The Senior Medical Scientist will:

  • Lead and coordinate the day-to-day operation of the Biochemistry and Haematology laboratory at Northern Cross
  • Ensure the delivery of an efficient, high-quality and patient-focused laboratory service
  • Work under the professional guidance of the Chief Medical Scientists in Biochemistry and Haematology based at Mater Private Hospital, Eccles Street
  • Support compliance with laboratory standards, quality systems, and regulatory requirements
  • Contribute to service development, workflow optimisation, and best laboratory practice
  • Liaise effectively with clinical teams and stakeholders across the organisation

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • To participate in the management function of the laboratory, in particular the discipline you are assigned to, ensuring that the clinical needs of the patient are met and is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the hospital.
  • To participate in the implementation of quality management programmes, which are patient centered and measure and audit the performance of user satisfaction.
  • To participate in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and methods as required.
  • To help ensure that all reasonable precautions and safeguards are in place to provide a safe place of work for all persons required to be in the laboratory in accordance with the current Health and Safety at Work Legislation.
  • To participate in the recruitment, training and supervision of staff in the department as required and help to promote a professional, punctual and dedicated team with effective open communications.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant procedures, best practice methods and all relevant ISO 15189 based standards and Hospital JCI standards.

Candidates must meet the following criteria

  • possess the Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/ Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street;

or

  • possess the Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork - Cork Institute of Technology course;

or

  • possess the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street or the Cork Institute of Technology awarded prior to 1994,

or

  • possess a recognised qualification at least equivalent to (a) or (b) above
  • possess a recognised qualification at least equivalent to (c) awarded prior to 1994

and

  • possess a postgraduate degree in the field of Medical Laboratory Science

or

  • have attained the fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science;

and

  • must be registered with CORU

and

  • possess four years experience in a medical laboratory since qualifying as a Medical Scientist, ideally in Biochemistry or Haematology

The successful candidate should possess good interpersonal skills and awareness / sensitivity towards patients needs.
