Senior Medical Scientist-Biochemistry

An opportunity has arisen in our Laboratory department for a permanent Senior Medical Scientist in Biochemistry.

This is a part time position, 21 hours per week.

Purpose of post:

To be responsible for the provision of an efficient, effective, accredited laboratory service for the patients of the Mater Private Hospital.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• To participate in the management function of the laboratory, in particular in the discipline you are assigned to, ensuring that the clinical needs of the patient are met and is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the hospital.
• To have full responsibility for specific areas of laboratory activities as may be delegated from time to time by the department head or nominee. 
• Deputise for Chief medical Scientist in his/her absence
• To participate in the implementation of quality management programmes, which are patient centered and which measure and audit the performance of user satisfaction.
• To partake in the timely and proper processing of all specimens received in the laboratory ensuring the delivery of a high quality pathology service in an efficient and cost effective manner.
• To lead and co-ordinate pathology staff and/ or support staff within the laboratory ensuring that work is allocated according to patient needs and demands in a cost effective manner.
• To participate in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and methods as required

Candidates must:

possess the Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/ Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street;

or

b)possess the Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork Cork Institute of Technology course;

or

c)possess the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street or the Cork Institute of Technology awarded prior to 1994,

or

d)possess the Certificate in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street or the Cork Institute or Technology or the Galway/ Mayo Institute of Technology awarded prior to 1997;

or

e) possess a recognised qualification at least equivalent to (a) or (b) above

or

f) possess a recognised qualification at least equivalent to (c) awarded prior to 1994

or

g)possess a recognised qualification at least equivalent to (d) awarded prior to 1995

and

h)be a member of, or be eligible for membership of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (MACSLM)

and

Must be registered with CORU

j)     The successful candidate should possess good interpersonal skills and awareness/ sensitivity towards patient needs.

and

k) The successful candidate must possess 4 years experience in the specific department since qualifying as a Medical Scientist

and

l) The successful candidate must possess a NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualification
