About this service

Autofluoresence is used to take high resolution pictures of the retina, the innermost lining of the eye.

Autofluoresence involves taking high resolution photographs of the retina to assist with the early detection or management of various eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma or hypertension.

The test is very simple and takes just 15-20 minutes.

Your pupils will be dilated with some eye drops for this test but your eye won't be touched and there are no puffs of air.

You may be dazzled for a moment by a flash of light from the camera when the photograph is taken and your vision will be blurred for two to three hours after the test from the dilation.

This test is used to diagnose certain eye conditions and also to help plan treatment. In some cases the photographs will need to be repeated regularly to monitor how the treatment is working or to monitor changes in your eye condition.

  • Have someone organised to bring you home.
  • Do not drive on the day of the scan.
  • Do not drive until your vision has returned to normal.
  • Bring sunglasses on the day of your appointment, as your eyes may be sensitive to sunlight.
