Education & Experience
Professor McCarthy graduated in Medicine from UCD in 1981. She trained in rheumatology with the internationally renowned Professor Daniel J McCarty MD at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She completed her rheumatology fellowship in 1990 and was promoted to associate professor of Medicine in the USA. She joined Mater Private Hospital as well as MMUH and Cappagh in 1999. As part of her clinical duties she teaches at UCD School of Medicine, where she was the first clinician to be appointed full clinical professor of medicine. Prof. McCarthy is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Rheumatology. She is registered in Ireland as a specialist in both rheumatology and general internal medicine.
Prof. McCarthy is an internationally recognised expert in gout and calcium crystal deposition diseases. She has published extensively in these areas and has contributed to numerous international guidelines on the treatment of multiple rheumatological conditions https://scholar.google.com/citations. Prof. McCarthy’s clinical expertise is in the management of rheumatologic disorders including but not limited to: inflammatory arthritis (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis), osteoarthritis, systemic lupus erythematosis, osteoporosis, vasculitis and polymyalgia rheumatica.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Prof. McCarthy is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (RCPI) and the American College of Rheumatology, a member of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland, the steering committee member of the UCD Center for Arthritis Research, the RCPI specialty training committee and the UCD MD committee. She is president of the Irish Society of Rheumatology from 2020-22. She is head of the rheumatology department at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital since 2004.
Her clinical and research expertise has been recognised by funding from the National Institute of Health, Arthritis Foundation, American Federation for Aging Research, US Department of Defence and the Wellcome Trust. She has been the recipient of numerous awards for her research.
Prof. McCarthy has spoken at many local and international scientific meetings including the American College of Rheumatology Annual Review course and state of the art sessions at the annual scientific meeting. She is author of 150 original scientific papers and book chapters.
