Education & Experience
Mr. Gerald McGreal graduated from UCC in 1991. Basic surgical training at Cork University Hospital led to appointment as surgical lecturer at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin, and subsequently, he was appointed to the Higher Surgical Training Programme, RCSI, working at Cork University Hospital and Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. After completion of general surgical training, he spent a year as vascular and endovascular fellow at Sir Charles Gairdner and the Royal Perth Hospitals, Perth. He was fortunate to work with both Michael Laurence-Brown and David Hartley, co- inventors of the COOK endovascular graft, and brought this experience to Cork, where he performed the first endovascular aortic aneurysm repair in Munster.
He was appointed as consultant vascular and general surgeon at Mercy University Hospital in 2002 and has worked in that capacity since then, introducing an arterial endovascular programme for aortic aneurysms and peripheral arterial occlusive disease, a large carotid endarterectomy/stroke prevention service, and the endovenous and open management of varicose veins. Unusually now for a vascular surgeon, he continues to practise in general surgery, being of the view that a broad-based practice helps maintain clinical acumen.
He performs a number of niche procedures including sympathectomy for vasospasm, hyperhidrosis and neuropathic pain and fasciotomy for compartment syndrome.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
From the academic point of view, he was awarded an MD by thesis, by NUI, and is a clinical lecturer with UCC. He is the author of about 40 scientific papers and a larger number of abstracts, presents regularly at local and national scientific meetings and is centrally involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training with both UCC and RCSI.
