Education & Experience  

Dr. Karen Fitzmaurice (MB, BCh, BAO, BMed Sci, MRCPI, FRCPath, PhD) is a specialist in infectious diseases. 

She qualified from UCC and moved to the UK to commence her specialist training in Oxford in infection medicine in 2003. She developed an interest in viral infections during her training and was successful in obtaining a prestigious Wellcome Trust Clinical Fellowship Award to fund a study on viral immune responses and was awarded a PhD from Trinity College Dublin in 2011. 

Following on from this she practised as a consultant in infectious diseases and microbiology in Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey where she developed her interest in viral hepatitis working with her hepatology colleagues in managing and treating patients with viral hepatitis. 

She worked part-time during her training and as a consultant and is a strong advocate for flexible training and working in medicine. She commenced work in Mater Private Cork in January 2020. Mater Private laboratory is a modern microbiology laboratory which has state of the art molecular platforms which facilitate same day testing for a range of conditions. 


Special Interests  

She has a longstanding interest in chronic infections - both viral and bacterial and has led and developed home IV antibiotic services in a number of UK NHS Trusts. She has worked and trained in the renowned UK Bone Infection Unit (BIU) in Oxford, a highly specialised UK referral centre for complex and deep-seated bone and joint infections and has treated thousands of patients with skin, soft tissue and complex musculoskeletal infections. Dr. Fitzmaurice also has interests in antibiotic prescribing and stewardship, multi-drug resistant infections and recurrent infections. 

She is accepting referrals - recurrent and chronic infections (viral, bacterial), community or hospital acquired infections (including MRSA, ESBL, CPE), returning travellers with suspected infections (fevers, post travel screens), infections in immune-suppressed individuals , pyrexia of unknown origin (PUOs).
