About

Education & Experience 

Dr Adeel Rafi Ahmed is a Consultant Nephrologist at Mater Private Network, Cork.

Dr. Ahmed is a specialist kidney physician who joins us from the HSE South/Southeast Network, having previously worked as a Consultant Nephrologist in Cork University Hospital, Kerry University Hospital and University Hospital Waterford.

Dr. Ahmed completed his specialisation in nephrology in Ireland, working in a variety of teaching hospitals to acquire experience in all aspects of nephrology. He has performed numerous leadership, management and teaching roles including an adjunct clinical lecturer role with University College Cork at its clinical site UHW. He successfully completed his tenure at Ireland's national kidney transplant centre, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin in 2020. Dr. Ahmed has been at the forefront of developing hospital guidelines and management strategies including the SGLT2 inhibitor usage in chronic kidney disease (CKD) for Cork University Hospital, and acute kidney injury (AKI) management for Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. 

After graduating with an honours degree in medicine and surgery from the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin, Ireland (RCSI), he went on to pursue basic specialist training in Internal Medicine (BST-Medicine) in Ireland in 2015 before initiating renal medicine training. 

Dr. Ahmed is an advocate for continuous education and research. He holds Membership of the Royal College of Physicians Ireland (MRCPI), Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, UK (MRCP)(UK), a diploma in clinical education from the National University of Ireland, Galway and a diploma in acute internal medicine from the University of South Wales, UK. He also holds the European Certificate in Nephrology (ECN), European Speciality Examination in Nephrology (ESENeph) and clinical nephropathology certificate (CNC) from the International Society of Nephrology . His achievements and credentials were recognised by the American Society of Nephrology, the largest renal organisation, by honouring him with the Fellow status (FASN). 

Dr. Ahmed believes in equitable healthcare delivery and is pursuing a professional certification in health care economics and policy from the esteemed London School of Economic and Political Sciences.

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships 

Dr. Ahmed actively participates in research and has numerous scientific publications. He has also co-authored a book chapter and is a reviewer for BMJ Open and other journals. His initial work focused on prevention of progression of CKD and the role of renal replacement therapy in the ICU. His publications can be viewed here.

He is a member of International Society of Nephrology, American Society of Nephrology and European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association.
