This morning we held a coffee morning to celebrate International Nurses Day and to acknowledge and thank all our nurses at the Mater Private for all of their hard work and dedication.
International Nurses Day, organised annually by the International Council of Nurses, celebrates the contribution that nurses make to societies around the world. Held each year on May 12th, this date has great significance as it is also the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a nurse who had a pivotal role in the development of modern medicine.
The United Nations and World Health Organisation work with the International Council of Nurses to recruit and train nurses worldwide. This is proving to be a very important task, as by 2030, estimates show that there will be a shortage of 18 million health workers worldwide.
Our coffee morning was met with a great reaction, with 25 spot prizes being handed out to those who popped down. A baking competition was also held between the different nursing departments. Each department chose to bake a cake in a style relating to their department and it was hard to choose just 3 winners from all of the delicious cakes. Each of the well-deserved winners won a hamper.
While this day specifically marks the work of nurses around the globe, we must also remember the hard work and commitment nurses give on a daily basis throughout the year.
