Last Saturday we held our Nurse Education Day centred around Cardiac Disorders, their diagnosis and early intervention. Our Consultant Cardiologists presented on a number of heart conditions including Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure as well as treatment options such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

The Heart & Vascular Team also presented on the Cardiac Transfer Service that the Mater Private offers to patients with heart conditions. We are one of the largest Heart centres in Ireland with three state-of-the-art Cath labs, operating seven days a week and in the last 12 months have had close to 1,000 patients transferred to us for cardiac procedures from public hospitals around the country.

The Cardiology Transfer Service has been designed with the patient and public hospital’s needs in mind by offering same day access to the Cath lab – a critical and lifesaving factor for patients needing urgent intervention. This service also helps public hospitals to manage their beds optimally as patients won’t be occupying a hospital bed awaiting transfer to a public hospital Cath lab.

This service is available to patients with health insurance who are admitted to a public hospital needing cardiac intervention. The patient’s insurance plan will cover their transfer by ambulance to the Mater Private Cath Lab, their procedure and their transfer back to the public hospital upon recovery. Contrary to what many patients think, usage of this service does not impact or increase their annual insurance premium and they can be followed up in the public hospital out-patient clinic if they wish following their procedure.

Following the presentations, the nurses were given a tour of the facilities in the hospital.
