About this service
X-ray uses ionising radiation to take images of the bones, organs and other areas of the body.
Walk-in service
Dublin
We offer a walk-in service for X-ray Monday – Friday, 8am to 4.30pm to all our Dublin facilities including our Day Hospitals.
If you require an X-ray for a medical visa, please note that our walk-in service for X-ray is not available. Instead, please book your appointment directly through our Visa Medical department by emailing visacentre@materprivate.ie
Cork
We offer a walk-in service for X-ray Monday – Friday, 8am - 6pm. Urgent appointments are typically available within 24 hours.
Please note: You must bring your referral letter with you. You will have to pay for your x-ray at the time of your appointment. You may be able to reclaim some or all of the cost on your health insurance outpatient benefits or via a medical expenses reimbursement on a tax return.
What you should know
It is helpful if you wear comfortable clothes without any metal such as zips, underwires, metal buttons etc.
Let the radiographer know if there is any chance you might be pregnant.
You will be asked to remove any clothing containing metal or jewellery from the areas being scanned.
You will be asked by the radiographer to move into different positions to achieve the images that your doctor has requested. You may find it uncomfortable to hold the positions but it only lasts for a few minutes. The x-ray itself will not cause you to feel any sensation or pain.
There are no precautions to follow after your scan. You can eat and drink normally, drive and can return to work immediately after your appointment if necessary.
Your scan will be reported by a consultant radiologist. The results will be sent directly to your referring doctor.
We are all exposed to natural background radiation every day. Medical exposures give a small additional dose on top of natural radiation.
The amount of radiation received from an x-ray is low and varies depending on the body part being examined. As long as it is clearly necessary to help make the correct diagnosis and treatment decision, the benefits of detection, diagnosis and treatment resulting from the x-ray should outweigh the risks.
