The Mater Private Emergency Department provides access to expert assessment and treatment. Whether you are acutely unwell or have a minor medical complaint our emergency team is here for you. This service is available for patients aged 16 years and over.

At this time the Emergency Department service is available only by appointment; no walk-in service available.

We are now accepting patients with medical and surgical conditions.

Before attending the Emergency Department, patients are asked to contact us by telephone in the first instance for screening purposes, to be triaged by the medical team and receive an appointment.

This will ensure that when you arrive at the Emergency Department you will be seen immediately. This is to reduce the time you spend in the department and your interaction with other patients or staff, in order to respect social distancing requirements.

We hope you appreciate this additional process is necessary to protect the safety of both patients and staff at this time.

The Emergency Department aims to treat all patients equally and our clinical team is happy to discuss any emergency cases with GPs and patients about a wide variety of conditions*, as follows:

  • Abdominal pain/general surgery

  • Back pain/spinal/chronic pain management

  • Cardiology (refer directly to Urgent Cardiac Care Service)

  • Collapse (unknown cause)

  • Deterioration of known respiratory illness (GP referral only)

  • Fever (case by case basis)

  • Gastrointestinal bleed

  • General deterioration

  • Gynaecology

  • Head injuries 

  • Non-cardiac chest pain

  • Non COVID-19 sepsis

  • Soft tissue infection

  • Urinary Tract Infection

  • Urology (such as kidney stones/blood in urine)

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea

  • Weight loss / Decreased appetite

*If your patient’s condition does not fall under any of the above headings, the Emergency Department team is happy to discuss the issue over the phone with you.


Unfortunately, since Mater Private is not a designated COVID-19 receiving facility under the national COVID-19 management strategy, we are not in a position to accept any patients presenting with emergency symptoms directly related to suspected or confirmed COVID-19 status. 

  • At this time we are unable to accept patients with the following conditions:

    • Confusion/Delirium
    • ENT
    • Fever with cough, shortness of breath, loss of smell or taste, recent foreign travel, close contact to a COVID-19 patient
    • Minor injuries (limb injuries/sprains/fractures/lacerations)
    • Neurology
    • Ophthalmology
    • Orthopaedic
    • Peadiatrics (under 16 years old)
    • Plastics

    The service is not suitable for the following patients and we advise that you attend your local emergency department.

    • Acute mental illness
    • Acute stroke
    • ENT emergencies
    • Metabolic medicine
    • Obstetrics

    There is no ambulance service available at the hospital.

The Emergency Department is led by Consultants specialising in emergency medicine and is an integrated service at the Mater Private hospital. You have access to all diagnostic services, investigations and treatments as well as to our extensive clinical and medical team should the need arise.
