The Mater Private Emergency Department provides access to expert assessment and treatment. Whether you are acutely unwell or have a minor medical complaint our emergency team is here for you. This service is available for patients aged 16 years and over.
At this time the Emergency Department service is available only by appointment; no walk-in service available.
We are now accepting patients with medical and surgical conditions.
Before attending the Emergency Department, patients are asked to contact us by telephone in the first instance for screening purposes, to be triaged by the medical team and receive an appointment.
This will ensure that when you arrive at the Emergency Department you will be seen immediately. This is to reduce the time you spend in the department and your interaction with other patients or staff, in order to respect social distancing requirements.
We hope you appreciate this additional process is necessary to protect the safety of both patients and staff at this time.
The Emergency Department aims to treat all patients equally and our clinical team is happy to discuss any emergency cases with GPs and patients about a wide variety of conditions*, as follows:
Abdominal pain/general surgery
Back pain/spinal/chronic pain management
Cardiology (refer directly to Urgent Cardiac Care Service)
Collapse (unknown cause)
Deterioration of known respiratory illness (GP referral only)
Fever (case by case basis)
Non-cardiac chest pain
Non COVID-19 sepsis
Soft tissue infection
Urinary Tract Infection
Urology (such as kidney stones/blood in urine)
Vomiting and diarrhoea
Weight loss / Decreased appetite
*If your patient’s condition does not fall under any of the above headings, the Emergency Department team is happy to discuss the issue over the phone with you.
Unfortunately, since Mater Private is not a designated COVID-19 receiving facility under the national COVID-19 management strategy, we are not in a position to accept any patients presenting with emergency symptoms directly related to suspected or confirmed COVID-19 status.
