Surgical Assistant
This role offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an experienced surgical assistant to contribute to high-quality patient care within Mater Private Network. Working under the direction and supervision of the consultant surgeon you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of high quality pre-operative, intraoperative and postoperative duties.
The department of urology is a consultant delivered service. The team consists of the general urological consultant who works in collaboration with the urology team in patient care and in formulating management plans for patients.
Key responsibilities & deliverables
- To act under the supervision of the urology consultant in the provision of a general urological service and to support the urology consultant in their duties.
- To cover operating theatre duties as assigned (to include the following):
- Assist in the preparation of the operating room and ensure all equipment is sterilised and functioning properly.
- Collaborate with surgeons and other healthcare professionals during surgical procedures.
- Operate robotic surgical systems with precision and efficiency.
- Monitor patients' vital signs and assist in pre/post-operative care.
- Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.
- Positioning of patients.
- Handling of instruments.
- Assistance in wound closure/glue/staples.
- To contribute to quality improvement; risk management initiatives and policy development so that the overall Surgical Service is of the highest quality and reflective of best practice.
- To adhere to hospital policies and procedures e.g., JCI, Code Blue, infection control, work hours and overtime.
Essential requirements
- Professional registration: must be registered with a relevant healthcare professional body.
- Experience: two to five years of post-registration experience in a hospital theatre setting is essential, with extensive experience as a surgical assistant.
- Robotics experience: experience with robotic surgery is highly desirable.
- Clinical aptitude: demonstrate a strong aptitude for clinical and operative practice.
- Education: successful completion of a recognized program of study in the relevant field.
