PET/CT
The Mater PET/CT Centre is an innovative diagnostic facility, providing equal access for public and private patients to PET/CT scanning. Patients with cancer, neurological conditions and other illnesses have access to diagnostic testing which can change the course of their treatment.
A PET/CT scan combines 2 types of scans – Computed Tomography (CT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET). The single scan provides detailed information on both anatomic and metabolic activity in a single scan.
It is used for scanning in cardiac and neurological conditions. Its main clinical use is in oncology – in particular patients with lung, colorectal, lymphoma, melanoma and head and neck cancers.

Fees
The Mater Private Hospital has a direct settlement arrangement with VHI Healthcare, Quinn Direct and Hibernian Aviva Healthcare in respect of eligible PET/CT scans carried out on an inpatient or outpatient basis.
PET/CT scan referrals must be prior approved by the insurer before the patient is given a date for their scan. Staff responsible for PET/CT scanning will ask the referring consultant to complete a prior approval form along with the patients signature and on receipt of this form will forward it onto the relevant insurer for approval. The insurer in turn will contact the PET/CT centre and inform them if the patient is covered.
In the case of a referral not being approved by the relevant insurer, the patient will be charged as per current practice on the day the scan is carried out.
