About Us
The Retinal Eye Centre at the Mater Private provides medical and surgical services for a wide range of retinal eye conditions.
Our dedicated consultant led Retinal Eye Centre is focused on providing rapid consultant access to diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with certain retinal eye conditions, where early diagnosis and treatment is key to limiting the level of sight impairment.
How Our Service Works
The Retinal Eye Centre at the Mater Private is a Consultant led service. Our services are organised and managed by an Ophthalmic Nurse Specialist.
Referrals are accepted from Optometrists, GPs and Consultants.
A Retinal Specialist Consultant reviews referrals and determines if you will be referred to the Retinal Eye Centre for assessment.
Conditions treated include:
- Age Related Macular Degeneration
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Retinal Vein Occlusion
- Epiretinal Membrane
- Retinal Detachment
- Anything behind the lens
The Consultant’s secretary will then call with an appointment and send written confirmation in the post. Your appointment will take 1 – 2 hours.
Most scans require pupil dilation, after which near vision will be blurred for up to 6 to 8 hours. We recommend you have an escort home and that you wear sunglasses as you may be sensitive to light. You should not drive for 24 hours after pupil dilation.
Results from the Retinal Eye Centre are reviewed by the Retinal Specialist Consultant, with whom an appointment is scheduled to discuss your diagnosis and if necessary a treatment plan is agreed. In some cases you will be seen on the same day by the Consultant otherwise your results will be reviewed and a subsequent appointment scheduled by the Consultant.

- Steroid Injections
- Laser Photocoagulation
- Vitrectomy
- Membrane Peeling
- Macular Hole Surgical Repair
- Complex Retinal Detachment Surgery
- Diabetic Vitrectomy
- Primary Retinal Detachment
- Redo Vitrectomy Surgery
Once you have been seen by your Consultant and a diagnosis is made, your Consultant may refer you for repeat scans to monitor response to treatment or changes in your eye condition.

Non retinal referrals may be faxed to the Retinal Eye Centre and referred onto the appropriate Consultant. The Retinal Eye Centre will then contact the referrer and inform them where the referral has been sent and contact details.
