The Retinal Eye Centre the Mater Private is a Consultant led service. Our services are organised and managed by an Ophthalmic Nurse Specialist. Referrals are accepted from Optometrists, GPs and Consultants. A Retinal Specialist Consultant reviews referrals and determines if you will be referred to the Retinal Clinic for assessment. The consultant’s secretary will then call with an appointment and send written confirmation in the post. Your appointment will take 1 – 2 hours.
Macular Degeneration
An Optician or GP can detect the signs of Macular Degeneration. Recent changes in your vision such as a ‘black spot’ in your vision or lines which should be straight are ‘wavy’ may be signs of Macular Degeneration.
Macular Degeneration, can affect one or both eyes, is a very common cause of reduced vision in Ireland but it does not lead to complete blindness. Macular Degeneration only affects central vision, not the side vision and it is not painful.
