About

Education & Experience

Dr. Lorraine Walsh graduated from UCC in 2002. Having worked as an intern in Cork, she then completed a two-year senior house officer general medicine training scheme at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. She was conferred a member of the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland (MRCPI) in February 2005. 

She trained as a specialist registrar on the National Radiation Oncology Training Programme, directed by the Faculty of Radiologists, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, from 2005 – 2010. During this time she obtained a diploma in management for doctors from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Institute of Public Administration. She also was awarded a first class honours specialist diploma in lean healthcare systems by the University of Limerick. 

She was conferred a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FFR RCSI) in December 2008, having successfully completed her fellowship examinations. Dr. Walsh’s main areas of interest are breast, gynaecological, lung and haematological malignancies. 

In 2010, she undertook a clinical research fellowship in breast and gynaecological radiotherapy at the world-renowned Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto. Her supervisors, Professors Anthony Fyles, Fei-Fei Liu, and Michael Milosevic are world-experts in their field, with a keen interest in state of the art research and management of such malignancies. During her time in Toronto, Dr. Walsh was involved with many clinical trials and research protocols, presented at international cancer meetings and published in peer reviewed cancer journals. 

She was awarded the Chairs Award for Academic Excellence in Research by a Postgraduate Trainee in 2011 before taking up her post as a consultant radiation oncologist at the Mid-Western Cancer Centre Limerick in August 2011. 

 

Special Interests

Dr. Walsh has a keen interest in MRI-guided brachytherapy for cervical cancers, reirradiation of gynaecological malignancies, and the adoption of novel radiotherapy technologies such as intensity-modulated (IMRT) and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) to reduce normal tissue toxicity during breast, lung and pelvic irradiation. 

 

Clinical Research & Professional Memberships

She is a member of the both the American and European Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO, ESTRO), and the All Ireland Cooperative Clinical Research Group (ICORG). She frequently tutors trainees in radiation oncology and lectures to general practitioners, medical physicians and medical students.
