Cardiothoracic surgery involves the surgical treatment of diseases affecting the organs inside the chest. Generally this includes the heart, major blood vessels and lung conditions.
The heart diseases may be categorized as follows:
- Acquired heart disease ( Coronary artery bypass surgery, valve disease, cardiac tumours and pericardial disease)
- Congenital heart disease(congenital heart defect that may require primary or subsequent surgery to repair this defect)
- Thoracic vascular disease (aneurysms or dissections of aorta, this may include valve surgery)
- Rhythm disturbances (ablation, Dor procedure, AICD)
Your surgeon will discuss your surgery with you on an individual basis.
