Largest private ophthalmic group in the country
In 2013, the first Telescopic Implant procedure was carried out in Ireland by Mr. David Keegan, Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Mater Private. This new treatment, carried out as part of the CentraSight Care Programme, means that patients with end – stage AMD (Advanced Macular Degeneration) now have a new option in Ireland to help improve their vision and quality of life. The procedure involves a tiny telescope being implanted into the eye of suitable patients, which has been demonstrated to improve vision.
Our team of 14 specialists, all fully qualified Consultant Ophthalmologists based in Ireland, represent the largest private ophthalmic group in the country. Each consultant offers advanced care in sub-specialties such as Glaucoma, Retinal Services, Ophthalmic Oculoplastic Surgery, Corneal and Refractive Surgery, Paediatric Services and Neuro-ophthalmology.
Our service is delivered through 3 core areas – Eye Laser, General Ophthalmology and Retinal – where a wide range of medical and surgical eye conditions are successfully assessed and treated.
- Eye Laser
The Mater Private Eye Laser Clinic was established in 1992, the first of its kind in Ireland dedicated to refractive
(corrective eye) surgery. One of the few hospital based clinics, it continues to this day as one of the largest and most experienced centres in Ireland. Since its establishment, we have performed over 20,000 refractive surgeries. We perform Laser Eye Surgery to treat:
- Short sightedness (myopia)
- Long sightedness (hyperopia)
- Astigmatism (blurred or distorted vision)
- Presbyopia (the need for reading glasses)
Our surgeons are highly qualified Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons with extensive experience in the use of Excimer and Refractive Surgery. Patient suitability varies for treatment and our experience ensures a range of treatment options are available at the Mater Private Eye Laser Clinic.
In addition to providing laser eye surgery to get rid of your glasses or contact lenses, we perform intraocular lens implantation surgery for patients unsuitable for eye laser surgery. This can be the case if you are too short sighted or too long sighted for laser surgery. An intraocular lens is placed just in front of the natural lens, acting a little like a contact lens within the eye. The Mater Private Hospital has performed over 1500 such procedures, more than any other centre in the country.
- Retinal Eye
At our retinal eye division, we offer rapid access to a range of assessments and tests to assist in the diagnosis of retinal eye conditions. We treat a wide range of conditions such as:
- Age Related Macular Degeneration
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Retinal Vein Occlusion
- Epiretinal Membrane
- Retinal Detachment
- Flashes of Light
- General Ophthalmology
Advanced care is offered in general ophthalmology conditions such as:
- Cataract Surgery
- Paediatric Ophthalmology - such as Strabismus, Amblyopia,
- Retinal Conditions
- Stargardts Disease - inherited juvenile macular degeneration
- Ocular Adnexal Service - tissues around the eye
- Oculoplastics & Orbital Surgery
