The Cancer Care Team

During your journey through cancer treatment you will meet a variety of staff members who will assist you with your treatment.

The roles of the different types of staff you might encounter are described below. We encourage you to speak to any of our staff members if you have any concerns in relation to your condition or treatment and they will provide you with any information you require.

 

Medical Oncologist

The Medical Oncologist will assess your condition and prescribe the appropriate chemotherapy or other treatment for you. They are responsible for your overall care whilst on Chemotherapy and will review your progress. Once you are finished treatment they will continue to monitor your condition.

Radiation Oncologist

The Radiation Oncologist is responsible for your care whilst you are on radiotherapy. They design the appropriate plan for your treatment and monitor your progress whilst on this plan.

Oncology Nurses

All our oncology nurses have undertaken specialist training in oncology nursing to ensure the best possible care is provided to patients living with a cancer diagnosis   The nurses will support your physical and emotional needs during your treatment and may be involved in administering treatments such as chemotherapy.

Oncology Liaison Nurse

There is an Oncology Liaison Nurse also attached to the Cancer  Centre. She is available to offer expert advice all aspects of cancer care. She is a highly trained specialist oncology nurse.

Breast Care Nursing Team

We have a dedicated breast care nursing team who offer expert advice, knowledge and information to patients referred in to the Specialist Breast Care Centre. These are registered nurses who have undertaken specialist training in all aspects of breast care.

Radiation Therapist

The Radiation Therapist is responsible for the day to day delivery of radiotherapy treatment. They will assess your progress during treatment and offer you advise on  daily living during the treatment.

Medical Physicist

The Medical Physicist is responsible for creating the plan for your radiotherapy treatment in consultation with your Radiation Oncologist and performing routine quality assurance testing of the treatment machine to ensure that everything is working as it should be.

Administration Staff Member

The administration staff member will greet you as you arrive for your treatment and ensure that you proceed from the reception area to the treatment area. They can also advise you on the cover offered by your insurance company for treatments.

Pharmacist

The Pharmacist ensures the safe dispensing of the medications required for your cancer treatment; this may include the preparing your chemotherapy.

Dietician

The Dietician provides nutrition assessment and counselling to patients who are having difficulty with their nutritional health.

Medical Social Worker

The Medical Social Worker discusses the impact that cancer is having on your life. The Medical Social Worker provides psychological, emotional (including short term counselling) and social support which includes practical support  on how to access services you need in the community, if you are interested in availing of same.
